The Queen led the Royal Family at a thanksgiving service for the late King Constantine of Greece in Windsor on Tuesday as the monarch continues his treatment. But it hasn’t always been easy for the Queen as her place and title were at the centre of controversy and therefore not assured. Camilla’s relationship with Charles often sparked fierce debates over what she would be called when her husband ascended the throne or whether she should even become queen. But following their wedding in 2005, eight years after the late Princess of Wales’s death and 10 since her divorce from then-Prince Charles, royal aides let slip Camilla had no intention of being queen and would be known as Princess Consort when Charles became King.

However, in 2011 Camilla had quite the exchange during a visit to a children’s centre, in Wiltshire. She was asked by an eight-year-old girl when she would be Queen. Known for her quick wit, the now Queen replied: “You never know”. In a move that’s been branded by many a gesture to avoid even more controversy, the late Queen Elizabeth announced her “wish” for her daughter-in-law to be known as Queen Consort just months before her death in September 2022.

Buckingham Palace said in a statement released on the 70th anniversary of her accession to the throne: “It is my sincere wish that, when that time comes, Camilla will be known as Queen Consort as she continues her own loyal service.” Meanwhile, increasingly more people have been warming up to Britain’s new Queen. In 2011 and just before the marriage of Prince William and Princess Kate, a YouGov / Cambridge University survey found that the three least popular members of the Royal Family were Prince Edward (+2 percent), Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall (-9 percent) and Prince Andrew (-13 percent).

But in 2023, YouGov placed Camilla ninth in its list of most popular royals with a popularity score of 41 percent. According to another tracker, the percentage of people who agreed with Camilla becoming Queen saw a 7 percent increase in one year. Back in May 2021, just 13 percent of people said Camilla should become Queen, however, a year later and one before Charles’s Coronation, the number jumped to 20 percent.

Elsewhere, 42 percent of people said Camilla should have the title Princess Consort once Charles ascended the throne in 2021, a number which fell to 39 percent in 2022.
