Meghan Markle moved to California in March 2020 with husband Prince Harry in an attempt to gain more privacy for her family. The Duchess of Sussex has been thrown back into royal life after the death of the Queen, with Meghan and Prince Harry left with no choice but to extend their UK trip. The couple have been seen a number of times since Her Majesty died last week, with their latest appearance being at Westminster Hall where Meghan curtsied to the late monarch. The Duke and Duchess initially only planned on visiting the UK for a week so they could attend charity events.
The pair have remained in London after Harry’s grandmother died at Balmoral Castle on Thursday, September 8 in Scotland. Meghan, 41, and Harry, who celebrates his 38th birthday today, had appeard at charity events in Manchester and London prior to Buckingham Palace releasing a statement that the Queen had been placed under medical supervision. The couple, whose children Archie, three, and Lilibet, one, are still in America, are expectd to stay in London until after Her Majesty’s state funeral on Monday, September 19 at Westminster Abbey.
Harry and Meghan moved to California after stepping down from their positions as senior royals – something which has since caused a rift amongst the Firm after a number of revelations from the duo. They are said to be living a more normal life in the US, but this changed in the past week. Meghan was seen at Westminster Hall yesterday as she supported her husband during a service for the Queen. The Duchess also stepped out alongside the Prince and Princess of Wales on Saturday at Windsor Castle where she spoke to members of the public and viewed tributes left for the late monarch.
While Harry is used to public appearances and the duties that come with being a member of the Royal Family, Meghan is more unfamiliar with the processes involved. She spoke to members of the public during the walkabout with Prince Harry, Kate and Prince William on Saturday. One fan even gave Meghan a spontaneous hug during the appearance. Meghan curtsied at the Queen’s coffin on Wednesday as she joined senior royals and other dignitaries at the Westminster service. The mum-of-two previously opened up in an interview about having to learn to curtsy when she started dating Prince Harry, admitting that it made her realise that being part of the family “wasn’t easy”.
Speaking to Oprah, Meghan recalled: “I remember Harry and I were in the car, and he says, ‘OK, my grandmother is there so we’re going to meet her’. And I said, ‘Oh great, I love grandmas.’ ‘But, right, do you know how to curtsy?’
“I thought, genuinely, that was part of what happens outside. I thought that was part of the fanfare. I didn’t think that’s what happens inside, and I said, ‘It’s your grandmother.’ He goes, ‘It’s the Queen.’ That was really the first moment that the penny dropped that this wasn’t easy,” she said.
