Though she has won almost 20 awards throughout her career, Kate is still touched by each and every win, as she still often struggles to contain her tears on stage. At last Sunday’s TV BAFTAs at Royal Festival Hall, Kate referenced her sweet reputation for becoming overwhelmed with emotion on stage. Kate, who starred in the latest I Am instalment with her daughter Mia Threapleton, went on to pay tribute to her child in her tearful speech.

She said: ‘If I could break it in half, I would give the other half to my daughter Mia Threapleton, we did this together, kiddo.’ ‘To people in power, please criminalise harmful content, we don’t want it… to any young person long person listening please ask for help, It will be there just ask for it,’ she added. Over the years, Kate has sweetly made a huge number of very tearful appearances on stage to accept awards for her work, including her very first BAFTA win in 1996.

Kate was just 20 years old when she took home the best actress in a supporting role gong for her performance as Marianne Dashwood in Sense and Sensibility. After her name was announced, Kate smiled and looked overcome with emotion and was seen holding her hand up to her face as she made her way on stage. During her acceptance speech, Kate’s voice appeared shaky as she gave out her thanks to her co-stars, while she looked slightly glassy-eyed.

Just years later in 2006, Kate was seen looking very emotional on stage as she scooped up a tribute gong at the Gotham Awards. And at the Golden Globe Awards 14 years ago in 2009, Kate scored two awards and famously struggled to get out her words through her floods of tears. However, she still delivered two very emotional and touching speeches as she accepted the best supporting actress gong for The Reader and the best actress award for Revolutionary Road.

After her best actress win was announced, Kate was seen sobbing with her head bowed at her table, before she emotionally took to the stage. Referencing her previous five Golden Globe nominations, Kate said between tears: ‘You have to forgive me. I have a habit of not winning things.’ Kate gasped for air before apologising to her fellow nominees – Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, Kristen Scott Thomas and Angelina Jolie.

After thanking her then-husband Sam Mendes, she concluded: ‘Now forgive me, this is erm. Gather. Is this really happening? Okay, erm.’ Seeing a producer gesturing her to finish the speech, she answered: ‘Please wrap up? You have no idea how much I’m not wrapping up. Okay. Gather. Thank you.’

Just one month later, Kate took home the best actress Oscar for her role in The Reader and fought to hold back her tears on stage. She admitted she planned to get ‘very drunk’ after the ceremony as she marked her milestone achievement. In recent years, Kate has gone on to win a whole host of awards, and still appears overwhelmed with emotion on stage, often delighting fans with her candid speeches.
