Prince Philip’s brutal nickname for Meghan Markle that he ‘never said to her face’
The late Prince Philip saw “similarities” between Meghan Markle and one very controversial royal. The late Prince Philip has one brutal nickname for Meghan Markle that he “never said to her face”, according to a royal expert.
Speaking about the late Duke of Edinburgh, royal expert and biographer Ingrid Seward said that he saw “similarities” between Meghan and Wallis Simpson, the late Duchess of Windsor. Much like Meghan, Wallis was American and she was a divorcee. Meghan married into the Royal Family in May 2018 – 32 years after Wallis’s death aged 89 in 1986. Appearing on GB News, Ms Seward’s comments came on the third anniversary of the late Prince Philip’s death on April 9, 2021.
Ms Seward said: “I think Prince Philip was very canny about people and he didn’t always see the bad in them, he tried to see the good in them. “I think he just couldn’t get away from the fact [of the] similarities between Meghan and Harry and Edward and Mrs Simpson.” She added: “There are so many similarities which is why he used to call her The Duchess of Windsor, I mean not to her face. “We used to call her dow – DoW [the abbreviation for Duchess of Windsor].”
Wallis Simpson became one of the most controversial figures in modern royal history, with Edward VIII making the decision to abdicate in December 1936 so he could marry her. In her book, My Mother and I, Ms Seward wrote: “One of the few wary of succumbing to (Meghan’s) charm offensive… was Prince Philip.” She added: “From the moment he detected her apparent similarity to Wallis, he referred to her as DoW.”
Commenting on Philip’s “barbed” remark, the author suggested that he thought Meghan, like Simpson, could be a disruptive force in the Royal Family. Ms Seward added that, unlike her husband, the late Queen had “high hopes” for Meghan.
The author wrote: “Not only did she like her, she had high hopes for what the American actress might be able to achieve with Harry for the youth of the Commonwealth.” Meghan and Harry stepped down as senior working royals at the start of 2020, just one year before Philip’s death. The couple now reside in California with their two children – Prince Archie, who will turn five next month, and Princess Lilibet, two.
