NFL teams were forced to cut their rosters down from 80 to 53 players by the August 30th deadline. Here are the Pittsburgh Steelers who just missed the cut.
It was a busy day around the league as NFL clubs were forced to cut as many as 27 players from between their final preseason game and the August 30th cut-down deadline at 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time. With each minute that passed, a handful of cuts would around the league clogged up our Twitter feeds as professional football players were forced to clean out their lockers and wave goodbye to their clubs. The Pittsburgh Steelers had to make some very difficult choices before the deadline.
We knew that many players were going to fall just short of making the final 53-man roster, but some surprising names are now searching for jobs following roster cuts. Some of these players are likely to land back in Pittsburgh on the Steelers practice squad, while others may not get another opportunity in the league.
The Steelers have some very thin depth at multiple positions on their roster, and this might have influenced some of their choices leading to final cuts. For some of these positions, I would expect Mike Tomlin and Omar Khan to be active in the waiver wire as rosters are being finalized and certain positions could use upgrades.
For other positions, the Steelers were forced to cut quality depth. A few of these decisions have caused controversy among many fans on social media, as they aren’t convinced that the organization made the correct move when it comes to some of these choices prior to the cut-down deadline.
The Steelers will be down to just 53 players by 4:00 p.m. on August 30th, but they could still elect to make some changes to their roster following the cut-down deadline to improve their depth. Here are all of the cuts the team has made during the third and final wave so far:
