But after marking the second anniversary of his mother’s death, the King is said to be determined to return to his duties with “renewed vigour”. One source told the Mirror: “The King has always been upbeat, not once has he allowed himself to question the future, he’s dealt with everything head on. “Now he is back in business. There is a spring in his step and a renewed vigour with it too. Everything is looking positive, which is welcome.”

Illness to the Princess of Wales is just one of the many issues to have plague the King’s reign

The King is claimed not to be willing to bend over backwards to heal the rift with his son Prince Harry, who has moved to the United States following his and Meghan Markle’s decision to step back as a senior royal. A palace insider told the Mirror: “Would the King prefer relations were not as they were between his son and the family? Of course. But the King is focussed on things he believes are more important right now.”

The King is determined to look ahead to the future, as he plans to cement his own legacy whilst paying tribute to the life of his mother. The source said: “Through all the trials and tribulations the King has had to deal with this year, for himself and his family, I’ve never seen a person so positive and upbeat about the future. “Even though he has been receiving regular hospital treatment, having to adapt his diary and way of working for a time this year, he never once felt sorry for himself or bemoaned his situation.

“With the autumn tour on the horizon to Australia and the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in Samoa, the King very much feels this is the second chapter of his reign and he is very positive about the future.” Ingrid Seward, who is the author of My Mother & I, about the relationship between the late Queen Eizabeth II and her eldest son, Charles, claimed the King knows that his son is “very stubborn”.

Referring to the ongoing legal battle between the Duke of Sussex and the Home Office about his security in the UK, Ms Seward told the Mail: “It’s damaging to his father. It’s embarrassing to his father on a more personal level, to think that his own son doesn’t feel safe in the country in his own homeland.

“He doesn’t let things go, Harry. That’s his nature, a bit like his mum. It’s very Diana to pursue something and Harry is just not letting go in spite of advice to the contrary. I do feel that this is certainly not helping any situation.” Harry received full publicly funded protection in the UK before stepping back as a working royal and moving to California in 2020.
