‘Queen Camilla was once my mum-in-law – here’s what she’s really like as a granny’

Like her husband King Charles, Queen Camilla has five biological grandchildren of her own. Queen Camilla’s former daughter-in-law, Sara Parker-Bowles, has opened up about what she is like as a grandmother. Sara, who shares two children with ex-husband Tom Parker-Bowles, has praised the royal for being very “hands-on” with Lola, 16, and 13-year-old Freddy. She said: “She’s a really good granny, very hands-on and she’s never been anything but nice to me.”

As well as Lola and Freddy, Camilla is also grandmother to her daughter Laura’s three children – Eliza, who was born in 2008, and twins Gus and Louis, who were born in 2009. Through her marriage to King Charles, Her Majesty Queen Camilla is also step-grandmother to Prince William’s three children – Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis – and Prince Harry’s two children – Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet – who he shares with wife Meghan Markle. Speaking to the Daily Mail, Sara said: “If Tom and I are arguing, it’s between us.

“The long-term relationship between her and her grandchildren is what’s important and that’s never changed.” Sara, who is a fashion editor, officially divorced Tom in 2022, four years after their separation. According to Sara, until last year, Lola and Freddy had no idea that their grandmother would ever be Queen. She said: “It was definitely surreal that she’s now Queen. “It makes things different. It’s going to be something hard for us to manage.”

Sara continued: “It probably helps our kids are the age they are where they just don’t care. “That’s refreshing and that irreverence helps you keep things in perspective.” All five of Camilla’s grandchildren have been largely kept out of the spotlight, but her three grandsons were involved in the King’s Coronation back in May.

Proudly standing on the Buckingham Palace balcony, Queen Camilla, 76, was joined by Gus, Louis, and Freddy. Camilla’s granddaughter Eliza was also a bridesmaid at Prince William and Princess Kate’s wedding in April 2011.
