The Wales family last year left behind their London base at Kensington Palace and moved to Windsor, however they are limited as to what they can do with the property.

Princess Kate has some strict rules that she and her entire family must follow while they are at home at Adelaide Cottage, the property they moved into last year, just east of Windsor Castle in Windsor Home Park. She and Prince William are currently raising their three children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis there, where they attend the nearby Lambrook School.

The four-bedroom house is also closer to Kate’s parents Carole and Michael Middleton in Berkshire, but it does come with one downside that the family have to respect. Adelaide Cottage is a Grade II-listed building, meaning it is subject to strict planning rules and regulations that even the royals must adhere to. Any alterations must be approved with special permission, even if they simply want to replace a window or add an extra room.

Listed status is given to buildings by Historic England, which states: “A building is listed when it is of special architectural or historic interest considered to be of national importance and therefore worth protecting.” The spectacular cottage is named after William IV’s wife Queen Adelaide, who had it built in 1831 as a retreat, which was also enjoyed later by Queen Victoria. Inside, the property boasts some breathtaking featues, including a marble Graeco-Egyptian fireplace and a coved ceiling in the master bedroom that features gilded dolphins and special rope decoration made from material from the Royal Yacht Royal George.

The smaller size of their cottage means they reportedly have no live-in staff, unlike at Kensington Palace or Anmer Hall where their nanny Maria Borallo used to stay with them. The property is also away from prying eyes, as according to MailOnline, it has seven gated entrances and exits to Windsor Castle. Its close proximity to Eton College has further boosted rumours that George may be sent there for his secondary education, following in his father and Uncle Harry’s footsteps.

Kate and William are known to be dedicated parents, with them sometimes bringing their elder children George and Charlotte along on royal trips. Body language expert Judi James said she believed the Princess and her daughter have reached a “turning point” in their relationship as “Kate goes to great lengths to engage and inform” Charlotte.

She added: “Judging from Charlotte’s facial expressions and body language, Kate could soon become redundant in this role and start to just sit back and relax in public, as Charlotte looks the most enthralled member of the Royal Family.”
